Creating an Organization

Organizations let teams pool prepaid credits, share billing, and let admins keep an eye on members’ running instances. Anyone can create one — you don’t need to talk to support.

Any logged-in user who isn’t already in an organization. Each Carolina Cloud user belongs to at most one org at a time. If you’re already a member of an org and want to start a new one, you’ll need to leave the existing org first (contact support).

  1. Go to Usage & Billing → My Organization in the dashboard.
  2. Click + Create an organization.
  3. Enter a name (2–255 characters, must be unique across all of Carolina Cloud).
  4. Press Enter or click Create.

You become the org’s owner immediately. From here you can:

  • Minimum 2 characters, maximum 255.
  • Names are unique across the whole platform, case-insensitive — Acme Bio and acme bio collide.
  • Pick something your teammates will recognize at a glance. The name shows up in invitation emails and on the My Organization page.

Creating an org doesn’t move any of your existing instances, buckets, or trial credits — they stay attached to your personal account. What changes is the billing chain: future usage now drains the org’s prepaid credits first, then the org’s payment method (if you add one), then your personal trial credits, and only finally your personal Stripe card. See Prepaid Credits for Organizations for the full billing waterfall and Organization Payment Method for the card-on-file step.

The user who creates the org is the owner and also automatically an admin. Both roles can invite members, top up credits, manage the org’s payment method, and stop runaway instances. The owner is additionally the primary billing contact: the org’s Stripe Customer is created with the owner’s email, so Stripe-side receipts and invoice notifications go to them.

Ownership cannot be transferred. The owner is set when the org is created and is never reassigned by any admin action. Promoting another member to admin gives them admin powers, but does not move the billing-contact role — that stays with the original owner. Owners cannot be demoted or removed.

An organization can have any number of admins. Owners and admins can promote regular members to admin, demote admins back to member, or remove members from the org — see Admin controls.
